Stone Turtles at Nutimik

who placed these stones in shapes of man
at Bannock Point
snakes and turtles turned to stone by some
Midewewin ritual
sweat lodges announce the sacred still

yes, we have no spiders today
they all crawled south to Peru
to the Nazca plain beside
the Pacific where they joined
their cousins from Mars
in guarding their ancient landing strips

Wanda Koop draws large
Pictures for Dimly Lit Rooms
hangs them
at the WAG from floor
to ceiling and beyond
their power calls
to the ancient hunters of Lascaux
and Altamira who, leaving
their mastodons and equus behind,
have come to pay homage
to their sister even the three
brothers have brought along their reindeer shaman
to perform the sacrifice
