Much-loved pastor dies

SASKATOON — Rev. Leonard (Len) Cyr of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saskatoon died in hospital June 3, 2012, at the age of 80 years.


Born April 28, 1932 in Richard, Sask., he was a successful businessman before becoming a priest, owning a dress shop and several beauty salons. He was ordained to the priesthood Sept. 3, 1976 by Bishop James Mahoney, serving in a number of parishes in the diocese.

He also served as chaplain at Saskatoon City Hospital and at Parkridge Centre, and was known for his love of people, and his appreciation for beauty, music and travel.

In 1990, Cyr was recognized with a Citizen of the Year award for his contributions to the community. Over the years he volunteered in many capacities, and served as a member of the board of directors for a number of organizations, including St. Paul’s Hospital and Queen’s House. Since his retirement in 2003, he regularly celebrated mass for a number of communities of religious sisters in Saskatoon.

The vigil of prayer for was held June 5 at St. Philip Neri Parish, with the Mass of Christian Burial celebrated June 6 at St. Patrick Parish in Saskatoon.
