St. Peter’s College wins national title

MUENSTER, Sask. — St. Peter’s College recently won the Gold Prix D’Excellence Award in the Best Program — Independent School or Small Shop category by the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education (CCAE).

Advancement offices across the country that operate with four people or less and who demonstrated their most effective program in public affairs and communications, development, alumni relations or student recruitment were judged by a panel representing education, business and other sectors. Criteria included effectiveness, execution, objectives/results, innovation and success.

St. Peter’s College (SPC) received the award at CCAE’s annual national conference held in Victoria, BC June 5 - 8. It was given the award for the highly successful Key to Success Campaign co-chaired by SPC alumni Senator Rod A.A. Zimmer and his brother J. Wayne Zimmer.

“It is a humbling experience to be recognized with the nation’s top honour in this category,” said Lisa Laskowski, SPC director of development responsible for the campaign. “The judges told us how awesome it was to be this far along at this stage. They stated SPC is on track and ahead of industry standards, adding that our candour and honesty to the community, especially in tough economic times, is making our campaign successful.”

The Key to Success Campaign is the most ambitious fundraising campaign ever undertaken in the 89-year history of St. Peter’s College. Launched in September 2008, the campaign’s goal is to raise $15 million in support of renewing, enhancing and expanding the college’s facilities, programs and services.

To date, the campaign has raised $12 million, $3 million of it donated from alumni, faculty, friends, businesses and other organizations. The Saskatchewan Ministry of Advanced Education, Employment and Labour contributed $3 million. The government of Canada, through its Knowledge Infrastructure Program, contributed $6 million.

“Our priority to revitalize the learning environment and enhance programs at this special college is so important to our country’s future,” said Rod Zimmer. “It is exceptional that we are being supported by the college’s board of governors, students, alumni, business, industry and community, educational, government and other partners to expand the tradition and excellence St. Peter’s is known for.”

Because of the campaign, renovations to Michael Hall, the college’s primary teaching building, have ensured a learning space that is safe and accessible. Renovations will be complete by March 2011.

Established in 1921, St. Peter’s College is an independent post-secondary institution located in Muenster, Sask. The college has been affiliated with the University of Saskatchewan since 1926. As Canada’s only Benedictine college offering face-to-face university classes in a variety of disciplines, SPC has built its campus, programs and services on a foundation of academic and research excellence, personal enrichment, social responsibility, community and other stakeholder support.
