New district amalgamates

SASKATOON — A Catholic school board created in Martensville, Sask. this spring has amalgamated with Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools (GSCS).

A five-member Martensville board of education that was acclaimed at the end of April voted May 27 to amalgamate with GSCS. On May 31, trustees from GSCS also voted in favour of amalgamation.

The Martensville board dissolved and the community is now represented on the GSCS board by trustee Wayne Stus, who already represents ratepayers living in rural areas southeast of Saskatoon.

“We look forward to working with you for a smooth transition,” GSCS board chair Diane Boyko told the Martensville trustees on hand for the amalgamation vote.

An immediate effect of the merger is that GSCS is now responsible for transporting students in the Martensville attendance area who wish to access Catholic education.

At an open house June 15 at Sister O’Brien School in Saskatoon, Martensville parents gathered to learn more about school programs and student transportation options.

Martensville representatives have said their ultimate goal is to have a Catholic school in the city of Martensville.

Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools is the largest Catholic school division in the province, with approximately 15,000 students in six high schools, 37 elementary schools and two associate schools located in Saskatoon, Humboldt, Biggar and Viscount. GSCS employs some 1,900 full-and part-time teaching, service and support staff.
