New Catholic school gets name

By Donella Hoffman

SASKATOON — Holy Family Catholic School is the name of Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools’ (GSCS) newest school, which will be built in Willowgrove.

“Holy Family is a name that will resonate with the children and families who will come to this school,” said board chair Diane Boyko. “This was an important consideration for the board as we made our decision.”

Trustees were also mindful that the school’s name will play an important role in shaping the culture of the new community, including its religious celebrations. Holy Family is also the name of the new cathedral under construction in the diocese.

The GSCS board of education made the final selection of the name June 21 after asking for suggestions from staff, school communities, area parishes and Willowgrove residents.

Trustees also decided that the school will be dedicated to Msgr. Leonard Morand, whose 51 years of service as a priest included teaching at St. Paul’s and Holy Cross high schools. Along with posts at several parishes in the Saskatoon diocese, Morand was the bishop’s representative to Catholic school trustees. He passed away in June 2007.

Construction of the new school was announced March 19 by Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall. Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools, the City of Saskatoon and Saskatoon Public Schools are partners in the project. Holy Family’s innovative design will include space for community activities. A daycare and a public school will also be built on the site.

In order to assist with planning and preparation for the school a principal has already been appointed. Connie Tenaski, currently principal of St. Michael Community School, will be principal of Holy Family Catholic School. She will continue with her duties at St. Michael until Holy Family moves closer to completion.

A public consultation was recently held with community residents to discuss the design of the new school. A concept plan is expected to be available this fall. Once approval of the design and final drawings are completed, the project will be tendered and constructed. Tentative opening date is September 2013.
