Commitment to the Future Campaign winds up at $1.123 million

REGINA — The 2009 Regina Archdiocesan Commitment to the Future Campaign that ended June 30, 2010 raised $1,123,000. It was the 10th campaign to raise funds in support of the 13 archdiocesan ministries and 10 social and educational institutions that receive grants from the archdiocese.

“Two new funds were created this year,” said Denise Walsh of the campaign office: “The Deanery Project Fund at $45,000, and $20,000 for the Cathedral Preservation Fund. The Cathedral Preservation Fund is for repairs to Holy Rosary Cathedral in Regina and Our Lady of Assumption Co-Cathedral in Gravelbourg.” Both buildings are showing their age and will soon be in need of repairs and renovations.

The campaign was about $20,000 down from last year’s total, so some ministries will not receive all their originally allocated funds. “We have a Special Programs and Projects Fund which parishes can access but no money will go into that fund this year,” said Walsh. The fund, however, does have a surplus from previous campaigns of about $250,000 and some of those funds will be used to cover this year’s shortfall.

Rural Catechetic and Adult Faith Ministries receive the largest amount from the campaign at $150,000, followed by Health Care Chaplaincy at $140,000 and $100,000 to cover placement costs, priests’ travel and moderators. Funding for the remaining 10 ministries ranges from $70,000 to $5,000.

Catholic Family Services is the largest recipient of grants allocated from the campaign at $50,000; $30,000 will help pay for the archdiocesan centennial celebrations, and Santa Maria Seniors Home in Regina will receive $20,000. Other third-party grants will go to university chaplaincy, various camps, Notre Dame College at Wilcox, Family Life, St. Michael’s Retreat Ministries, Friends on the Outside and Refugee Support. Third party grants total $159,000.

The campaign was initially named the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal but was changed to the Commitment to the Future Campaign to reflect that the money is used to support archdiocesan outreach ministries. The goal is set each year at $1,250,000 but reached or exceeded that goal only in the first three years of the campaign. Since then annual campaign receipts have hovered between $1.1 and 1.2 million.

The campaign this year will change to a calendar year rather than run from July 1 to June 30 the following year.

“It will make financial reporting easier to follow as we will no longer have one campaign extend over two calendar years,” said Walsh. “This campaign will end December 31, 2010. Any gifts received after this date will be allocated to the 2011 campaign which will run January 1, 2011 - December 31. The only change parishes will notice is that rebates will be paid out as of December 31,” said Walsh. Parishes receive 80 per cent of any amount raised over their goal.
