NINETY-NINE YEARS — Fellow Oblates and other friends gathered Sept. 5 at Samaritan Place in Saskatoon to celebrate the 99th birthday of Rev. Leo Engel, OMI. Born Sept. 5, 1913 in Regina, Engel entered the Oblates of Mary Immaculate novitiate in 1932, studying at St. Charles Scholasticate in North Battleford from 1933-1935. He travelled to Poland to study at St. Bernard’s Seminary in Obra, near Poznan from 1936 to 1938, and was ordained there June 12, 1938, before returning to Canada to serve in many positions of leadership and formation during his 74 years as a priest.
