TASHLICH — Members of Regina’s Beth Jacob Synagogue participate in the tradition of Tashlich Sept 23. Tashlich in Hebrew means to cast away. The tradition of casting bread on flowing waters symbolically means casting away last year’s sins and beginning the New Year with a clean record. With Wascana Lake benign at this time of year, gulls and Canada Geese take the place of flowing water by removing the bread. The tradition includes recitation and chanting of associated prayers by the community, led by Rabbi Jeremy Parnes. The tradition is associated with Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year. (Flegel photo) |
